Is it a fruit? Is it a root? A tea? A leaf? Is it somewhere that’s make-believe? Well, it does have fruits. It does have roots. It does have leaves and can be a tea. It is definitely not make-believe. Ashwaganda is a perennial native herb in India, but here on the Kitsap Peninsula, we grow it as an annual because it cannot handle cold, frosty weather. A great adaptogen to help aid our mind, body, and spirit in stress relief and calm sleep. Even though most adaptogens are considered safe, always consult your doctor first to make sure. It is part of the solonacia family, the same as our tomatoes and peppers. When you think of growing Ashwaganda, just treat it like you would tomatoes and peppers. It grows seed pods that resemble the ground cherry with its paper lantern protective coat and small berry filled with seeds hidden inside. Seed pods will come to full maturity by September/October, making it possible to save seed for next year’s plants. Plan to harvest the roots in the fall before the frost sets in, if you are going to use them. Again, always check with your doctor to make sure and an herbalist to get proper dosing. Even if you do not plan to use the plant, it makes a great addition to any garden. Start these seeds inside in late February or early March, like you would peppers. Heat mats and lights inside will be needed, and do not plant outside until June, when our nighttime temperatures are going to stay around 50 degrees. Give them plenty of space in the ground and a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Ashwaganda forever! // NIKKI PARKS
