December Garden Thoughts From Urban Gnomestead

IT’S THE SECOND MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF the year, seed catalog season! The time of year when we get to sit in our jammy pants and hoodies, drinking cups of some hot beverage, have the fire blazing, and look to see what we want to grow for the next year. Sign up with: Uprising Seeds, Adaptive Seeds, Deep Harvest Farm, Saltwater Seed Company, Territorial Seed Company, and High Mowing. I also get the Baker Creek Complete Seed catalog but I don’t usually order through them. Planning a garden is a super important task and helps with fertility, pest management, and not wasting expensive seeds. It can be as easy as drawing it all out on grid paper, using computer software programs (GrowVeg, SeedTime, or Garden Savvy but I do not have experience with this one), or even hiring me as your local garden consultant to do it all for you. If you need to ask Santa for anything, I always recommend a few things: a good journal for the next garden season, garden books (hit me up if you need a full list), a hori-hori is a must-have tool, and a good pair of hand clippers.

Follow Nikki @urbangnomestead for local garden growing advice, #farmlife and some the occasional tik-tok dance. Also check out her free monthly garden talks from 1-3 p.m. the final Sunday of each month at Ridgeline Brewing, Bremerton. This month’s foucs: Basil
