Do you love some good curry soup? Are you aging and need more natural anti-inflammatory food in your diet? Do you just love the look of tropical plants growing on your property when we live in the PNW? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you need to consider growing Turmeric! This tropical root can grow in our PNW summers with a little extra thought and care. It’s going to need to be on your brain around the darkest time of the year and start inside no later than early February. You can buy roots from Territorial Seed Company, but they won’t send you plants until March/April, which can be a little late for our cooler Olympic maritime climate, but a great option if you don’t want to spend months babying roots in the house. I suggest you run up to Town ‘n Country (old Central Market) or a good local asian food market and find yourself a few large pieces of whole root. Roots where you can see possible nubs growing out of the segments or the tips. Place your roots in a well-draining shallow container filled with coco coir. You want about 2 inches below the root and no more than an inch above the root. Heat mats or the top of the fridge will be needed to provide the appropriate warmth for the soil, encouraging the roots to grow. Once you see visible green popping out of the soil, you will want to add lights for 12 hours a day. Around the middle of April, you can move into larger pots that will be its growing pot for the summer, or just temporary if going into the ground. Don’t leave outside or plant into the ground until at least the first of June. We need to make sure we are keeping at least 65 degrees in temperature for our tropical plants. If you grow them in the ground, you could even consider growing under greenhouse plastic to keep it nice and warm. Full sun, which is six or more hours, even moisture through the heat, and loose, deep soil are all that is needed. You should be able to harvest your roots in October before the frost sets in. Making sure to keep a couple of root segments to grow out again for next year. // NIKKI PARKS Find more Urban Gnomestead on the socials @urbangnomestead
