Dear DTEO: What’s the strange, creepy feeling I get when I’m alone in that one corner of the basement of my house… and what can I do about it?
MY PARTNER AND I WERE HOUSE SHOPPING recently and came across one very memorable house. It’s definitely one we won’t forget anytime soon, and not in the ‘it’s super cute and we want it to be our future home’ kinda way. It was straight up haunted with a sprinkle of demon. Yup. No joke.
My partner and I had driven by the cute craftsman style house with yellow exterior, white trim, red door, and well manicured shrubbery. We were definitely interested in having a tour with our realtor. The next day our realtor met us and retrieved the electronic code to unlock the front door. The lock refused to budge. It simply pretended to unlock the door with whirring and movement noises. Our realtor knew that it was the correct code because he had just shown the house recently and was working on an offer for another client. After a few more times, I checked the energetic signature of the lock and sure enough – it looked like an infinity symbol over the lock and where it met the door frame. It was bright red and angry looking = ‘You Shall Not Pass.’ After a few more tries our realtor huffed and went to open the back door.
My partner and I looked at each other and she said “I don’t think this house wants you inside it.” Ever the optimist, I replied:“Maybe the house has already picked its owner and isn’t interested in us viewing the place.” The front door opened and our realtor let us in while also joking that maybe the house didn’t want us in it. It was definitely starting to feel this way. We viewed the main living area and it was lovely. It felt good, open, and spacious. We could see ourselves enjoying some of the spaces. It had a lovely master suite bathroom with a deep soak tub. Yum. Then we went upstairs. Immediately, going up the stairs, I felt a tightness in my chest – similar to how a panic attack feels. The hairs on the arms saluted. I had to take a deep breath to try and ground myself. I got to the top floor landing and looked at my partner. I mouthed to her: ‘this place has problems.’ She nodded vigorously. I looked into the room directly to my right and there was a door that opened into an eaves storage space. Opening up the door and peeking inside, was the memory of a little boy, curled up looking terrified and sad with the telltale anger underlying all of it.
Now before we go any further with this story… let’s talk about what I call ‘leftover bits.’ The memory of the boy isn’t what most people would call a ghost in the Hollywood and scary story sense of the word. This leftover bit was a manifestation of all the heavy emotions the house had absorbed over time. There might have been a child at one time or another who suffered at the hands of their parents and the house witnessed all of it. No, the kid probably did not die in the house. They probably grew up, moved out and hopefully got some therapy. In the meantime the energy became trapped and fed on other emotions/energy the house absorbed and voila: a leftover bit. We have to remember that we, as humans, are energy generators. We have bio electric fields that our nervous systems produce from its electrical nature. All the feelings (happiness, sadness, excitement, anger, etc) we experience get released around us, and the spaces we occupy absorb it. This is why it’s so important to have your home energetically cleansed regularly, and ensure the energetic lines within the house drain properly…
But back to the story: At this point, our realtor joined us and asked what we were talking about. I mentioned that this house had problems, and that former owners had been unkind to their children. He nodded and agreed. He felt it too. You don’t have to be psychic to be energetically sensitive and intuitive. We all quickly headed back down stairs as the discomfort grew. I felt the pressure release in my chest, and I could take deep breaths again. My partner was just about done with being in the house after this, and I don’t blame her. But curiosity runs through my veins and I have a hard time resisting, especially when it comes to houses. I decided to descend into the basement. I opened the door and our realtor wrinkled his nose. “That urine smell is new. Wasn’t here yesterday” he said. Sure enough, there was the scent of stale urine wafting up the stairs. “I hope an animal didn’t get in,” he continued. I simply raised my eyebrows as this was a classic symptom of a demonic presence and a clear sign we were not welcome.
We continued down the stairs to the basement anyway because that’s how I roll.
The realtor and I wandered around the labyrinth of the basement when my partner said alarmed, “Are those flies?” Both the realtor and I quickly went to where she was and looked at one of the few basement windows. Sure enough, there was a cluster of flies. Not just one or two, but at least a hundred. Classic symptom number two of a demonic presence in a house. Hello, Amnityville Horror. “That’s not good,” our realtor said. I agreed fully. We decided to end the tour right then and there and leave the premises. I told our realtor if the soon the be owners of that house started having issues (and they definitely would) to give them my card. Now mind you, I don’t operate within the Christian framework. I view what is culturally considered a demonic presence as a different dimension visitor that operates very differently from us humans. They feed off our energy, especially fear and anger. Too much exposure to this kind of environment can twist our mental health and cause all sorts of other problems within and around ourselves. Considering the emotional history of the house based on what was going on upstairs, I’m not surprised the demon moved into the basement. It was a perfect feeding ground. Don’t get me wrong, I have a very strong and passionate belief that our homes should be sanctuaries for ourselves. We should feel peaceful and safe at all times within our home. I’m hopeful that the new owners will reach out before it gets too difficult.
