Urban Gnomestead: March Garden Thoughts

THE DAFFODILS ARE BLOOMING, the tulips are budding, the birds are singing, and the weather is warming. Spring is ABOUT to start! In our wonderful microclimate of the PNW, we will get what we call the false spring. Mother nature always gives us a little taste of warmth and sunshine to start waking us from our winter slumber. Still, winter has a hard time letting go. Inevitably, we get a late winter cold snap as she wishes us a bon voyage and journeys to the southern hemisphere. Be mindful of this early warmth before we pass into the true spring equinox on March 20th. Don’t be in a rush to get your seeds into the ground, unless you have some good protective covers for them. I heard someone say that they look at the equinox as the peak of that season because the weather has been a mixture of the two surrounding seasons before and after the equinox. When you stop to think about our spring weather this statement seems very true about our climate. Early March brings a mix of spring and winter while late March can bring the same. It is a time of birth. Which, we all know, the natural birthing process can take a while and comes when it is ready. We cannot rush the most perfect and natural processes of this world. March is a time for mindfulness, renewal, and rebirth, not just for the earth but for us as humans. // NIKKI PARKS
