Trails Of Transformation: A Day On My Mountain Bike At Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park

THE RIDE BEGINS with unnecessary pops, hops and zig zags all across the trail. Fatigue will soon set in and emphasize efficient lines, gears, and pedal strokes.

Outward Expression becomes Inward Focus

Around a blind corner, I am surprised by a deer standing in the trail. Then we zoom together until he veers off into the woods.

Fear becomes Exhilaration

The chipmunk taunts me from his tree. The grasshopper snaps and flaps, bounding ahead. To the hummingbirds, I am a moving playground.

Animals become Spirits

The trail weaves in and out of the thick forest and denuded land, my eyes struggle to adjust between the bright light and dark shadows. Logged for the last time.

Progress becomes Preservation

I look into the clearing and spot one lonely tree standing out from the baldness.

Insignificant Bystander becomes Sole Survivor

Grab on tight, I’m dropping in! Avoiding rocks, sticks and bumps while the trees in my periphery become a blur.

Gravity becomes Adrenaline

I pause to catch my breath next to a rock the size of my car. I stop just long enough to contemplate the origin of this erratic time traveler.

Mundane become Extraordinary

Back in the parking lot I see more people arriving. I don’t know anybody here. But I share something with them.

Strangers become Community
