THIS PROBABLY ISN’T THE PLACE to tell you this… This should be all about the rad new album from the local three-piece alternative rock band Chameleons. But last month, the drummer of the band that I’m in took sick. In a scary way. The doctors think he had a minor heart attack, but then, they couldn’t control his blood pressure for more than a week. Way too high, way too low. Almost to that ‘you should be dead’ range. And repeat. It was some scary shit. The reason I’m telling you all this, is because this guy is one of the most recognizable, influential and loved dudes in the local music scene. In response to this situation, five bands, three venues, multiple artists and hundreds of people in this town came together and donated thousands of dollars over three shows. It was massive. The dudes in Chameleons were one of those bands. They put up their show as a fundraiser. And their new album is killer. It’s the band’s third release in five years. It’s an eight song collection of new and old stuff that shows the colors of the band from their stompy, heavy newer stuff to the old smooth, catchy powerpop thing. It is awesome. You should listen to it. But maybe even more important than the music and the shows, with so many people having sent so much of their energy and thoughts in this one drummer’s direction, if you believe in that kind of thing, it might have saved his life. Seven days in, after many manic swings, the message about his situation was finally broadcast. Messages of support came back in mass. The next day, he had stabilized and was back home. I may be a hippy, and I know that isn’t always how it works, but you can’t tell me there isn’t power in community. // BILL MAN
